Campaigns for ‘Safe Drinking Water’ | Cholera Response Activity

With the increase in cholera infection cases at Kathmandu, it is essential to ensure the safety of our drinking water to prevent spread of water borne diseases.

In this regards, ENPHO with the support of UNICEF and in coordination with Kathmandu Metropolitan City and WASH cluster is organizing various campaigns to raise awareness on importance of safe drinking water where incidence of cholera cases were reported.

Booth Campaign

A week long Booth Campaign at those places to raise awareness on importance of safe drinking water. This event was organized from 5th July to 17th July, 2022 at five different wards of Kathmandu including Ward no. 13, Ward no. 29, Ward no. 28, Ward no.14 and Ward no. 16.


Wards were selected according to cholera cases reported by Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD). With awareness raising through dissemination of IEC materials on water purification, activities like water quality testing and distribution of Piyus (Chlorine Solution for water purification) were also carried out to help general public have access to safe drinking water.

Door-to-door Campaign

Door-to-door campaign was also conducted for the households of five wards where booth campaign was conducted. During the household visit, IECs related to ‘Safe Drinking Water’ were disseminated to raise awareness on water quality testing and PoU options. With this, Piyush were also distributed and along with that, water quality testing using ECC vial was conducted at 20 HHs of each Wards.

Campaign for Food Vendor

Food vendors of the five wards were sensitized on the use of safe water for customers and maintaining hand hygiene for the prevention of waterborne disease. To ensure the quality of drinking water and aware food vendors on their drinking water quality, water quality testing using ECC Vail were done for 20 food vendors of each wards. And along with this, Piyus was also distributed to food vendors to help ensure drinking water quality.

Training on Gender and Care Work for MMH Champions

Under Hygiene and Behaviour Change Coalition project, ENPHO with the support of Oxfam conducted Gender and Care Work training for Mum’s Magic Hand (MMH) Champions on 17 to 18 December, 2020 at Indreni Food Banquet, Imadol, Lalitpur. The purpose of this training was to familiarize participants with the gender socialization, gender roles and care work.

Training was led by Ms. Srijana Karki, Senior WASH Officer and Gender Focal Person, and co-led by Ms. Srijana Shakya, Senior WASH Officer and Ms. Ritu Sharma, Assistant PHP Officer, ENPHO.

After the training, Mr. Ajay Bhandari, an active participant highlighted, “this training made me analyze the gender role of men and women at household and community level. I also realized how women are involved in many unpaid care work. Thus, from now onwards, I will always try to reduce the work burden for women at my home and in the community too”.

Likewise, Ms. Milu Shrestha, next participant expressed, “although I am graduate student, I wasn’t aware about gender neutral words which I learned and found very interesting and pragmatic.”
Altogether 10 individuals including 7 female and 3 male MMH champions participated in the training.

ENPHO with the support of Oxfam has been promoting hand hygiene behavior integrating gender and care work at Mahalaxmi Municipality to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 disease. This kind of training can create awareness and support to minimize the work burden of women at household level and also in the community during the pandemic situation.
